Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Is Travel Insurance Worth It?

Yes! Travel insurance is so important for any trip you take. Protect yourself from unexpected problems when you travel. See our Top Reasons to Purchase page for more information.

Do I need extra coverage? I already have credit card travel insurance.

Great question. Credit card travel insurance can have lower benefit limits and special conditions to activate the coverage. Comprehensive travel insurance from a specialized provider will provide greater benefits coverage and peace of mind for you.

Do I need extra coverage? I already have health insurance.

With health insurance in the US, there are limitations on what bills they will cover overseas. Often your domestic health insurance won’t pay for an evacuation back to the US and you may be stuck overseas until you’re well enough to travel commercially.

How does travel insurance work?

For travel insurance with Travelex, you’ll first get a quote online to find out the amount you’ll need to pay. Once you’ve completed the process and purchased your travel insurance, certain coverage will start next day, and others will vary depending on what you’ve added to your policy (e.g. Car Rental coverage). If anything goes wrong on your trip you can contact our 24/7 emergency assistance team for help. If you lose your luggage or need to make a claim, our speedy “pic and a click” claims app will help make the process easy. Travel insurance is purchasing coverage in case something goes wrong - reducing risk and increasing enjoyment on your vacation.

How much travel insurance do I need?

You should choose the plan that best suits your needs and desired level of coverage. For more budget conscious customers the Travel Basic plan may meet your needs, while international travelers may prefer Travel Select.

When should I buy travel insurance?

It's a good idea to purchase a travel insurance plan right after you’ve made your first trip payment. The earlier you purchase, the sooner you have coverage to protect your trip.

What does travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance covers unforeseen events for domestic or international trips. Our plans combine travel insurance coverage and travel assistance that protects you before and during your trip until you return home.

What does travel insurance not cover?

Travel insurance generally won’t cover events that were reasonably foreseeable, and you will need to take steps to reduce risk on your journey. For example, policies will not cover claims arising as a result of intoxication or being under the influence of drugs. It’s important to check the exclusions in your policy document before departing on your trip.

Does travel insurance cover terrorism?

Our trip cancellation benefit can provide coverage if there is a terrorist incident in a city listed on your itinerary within 30 days of your scheduled arrival. Please check the Policy document for definitions on what is classified as a “Terrorist Incident”.

Where can I buy travel insurance?

You can purchase Travelex travel insurance right here on our website. Simply get a quote and purchase a policy online today.

Can I get travel insurance for an existing medical condition?

Yes, coverage is available if you purchase the plan within 15 days of your initial trip payment for the Travel Select plan, or 3 days of your final trip payment for the Travel America plan. Additional requirements vary per plan.

Will I receive documentation of my policy to carry with me?

You will receive a Confirmation of Coverage and applicable plan documents, or Policy via e-mail. The Confirmation of Coverage will include policy information such as your confirmation number, policy effective date, benefit levels and important contact information. The Policy will provide the plan details including benefits, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.

You should take both documents with you while you travel in case of an emergency. You may also want to print your Travel Assistance contact information if traveling overseas.

What is Primary Coverage?

Primary Coverage refers to the order in which a travel insurance claim can be filed with your travel insurance provider. Primary plans pay out from the first dollar owed, allowing claims to be filed directly with the travel insurance provider, eliminating involvement of a traveler’s health insurance company. The biggest benefit of having primary coverage is the speed of reimbursement. With Primary Coverage, you typically receive reimbursement on eligible losses first before any other collectible policy.

The Travelex plans that include Primary Coverage with no deductibles are Travel Select, Travel Basic, Flight Insure, and Flight Insure Plus.

What is Secondary Coverage?

If you have medical expenses while traveling, secondary coverage means you will need to file a claim with your existing insurance provider and then file a claim with your travel insurance provider for reimbursement. The Travel America plan offers secondary coverage. This can be a great supplemental medical expense option to help cover out-of-pocket copays and deductible expenses not covered by your primary medical plan.

Secondary Coverage is available on the Travel America plan.

Can I cancel my travel insurance policy?

If you are not completely satisfied within the 15 day look period of purchasing a plan, and have not yet departed or filed a claim, Travelex will refund your plan cost.
